The fix in that message didn't solve the underlying problem which originated in debconf (and has since been solved in etch). Instead, it fixed the "wrong returnvalue logic in the config script". Nobody has anywhere in the bug stated that the logic is not wrong. So either you just apply my fix, or you investigate further why it still works. I suspect that it works just because if the question is not shown, it fails to break, but then validates the value in SAFE, which is 0 in this case.
