Usage of the driver with 2.6.x kernels has been fixed in upstream release 1.1.1: setting Option "Device" to the appropriate event device (or to a symlink e.g. from /dev/input/by-id/) works.
Support for the "auto-dev" device option has been implemented in upstream release 1.2.0.
