It's even worse for me, the windows themselves become ghosts as well, so that they cannot be moved else you can't see them anymore. My workaround is to suspend-to-disk instead, using s2disk (package uswsusp). This is one of the things we hope that the future release of X.org (X11R7.2 or 7.3) will fix, via the modesetting branch. This won't help you if use etch, but after etch is released you could try the new version of xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting once we get around to updating it.
