Hi, I suffer from the same problem, running the latest Nvidia proprietary driver from experimental and compiz 0.2.2.
I noticed the following error when returning from a VT, compiz being launched manually on a console: /usr/bin/compiz: line 23: 6483 Segmentation fault /usr/bin/compiz.real $COMPIZ_OPTIONS "$@" $COMPIZ_PLUGINS compiz just stops working, and metacity seems to be relaunched automagically.
