The main issues seems to be:
* about two seconds black screen, from time to time, when doing an action with keybord or mouse which have a big impact on screen,
such as make a window bigger (with dri), or searching data within a PDF under vmware, or searching data with a web page on firefox (without vmware).
* graphic card hang (definitive black screen, but computer works as possibility to change NumLock dell from console ALT-F1 to ALT-F6).
However as the card is unusable, it requires rebooting computer.
* some keys might be lost.
I have two similar computers,
One works without any issue, when the other one as the kind of issue described
above.
Both computers have motherboard ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe 1526
and video card ATI Radeon 7000.
However both motherboards and video cards have some subtle differences.
Main differences are:
The good computer:
512MB,
kernel start BOTH with append="hdc=ide-scsi noapic" or with append="noacpi hdc=ide-scsi noapic"
one network card
one VGA card:
:~$ lspci -vv -s 01:00.0
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY
[Radeon 7000/VE] (prog-if 00 [VGA])

(...)
The bad computer is:
2048MB,
kernel DOES NOT start with append="hdc=ide-scsi noapic" BUT DOES with
append="noacpi hdc=ide-scsi noapic"
two networks cards (the motherboard one is deactivated by BIOS)
one VGA card:
:~$ lspci -vv -s 01:00.0

:Does only using one logical CPU make a difference?
No such a binary kernel seems to be available in debian etch testing.
: How about
:running a newer kernel or disabling the DRI?
Disabling DRI reduce the issue, but issue still exist.
:Does the xserver-xorg version in experimental have the same problem?
The problem still exist, with about actual etch testing:
