Package: x11-common Version: 1:7.0.20 Severity: normal Severity note: this problem blocks the upgrade of X11 and any other packages that happen to be upgrade targets at the same time. It may leave the user without a functioning X. So it may warrant higher severity. On the other hand, the packages that caused the trouble are likely not too common, and there is a work-around.
I'm reporting this as suggested in http://wiki.debian.org/Xorg69To7. The following packages own stuff in /usr/X11/bin/, and thus make the upgrade impossible. The work-around is to purge them with dpkg -P. apt-get remove does not work; it gags on the weird state of things in the middle of the X transition. x11-common needs to conflict with cbb guitar xext Once I dpkg -P'd these packages I was able to complete the upgrade with apt-get -f install apt-get dist-upgrade I had initiated the upgrade with apt-get dist-upgrade -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (990, 'stable'), (50, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.4.27advncdfs Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) Versions of packages x11-common depends on: ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.1 Debian configuration management sy ii debianutils 2.16.1 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii lsb-base 3.1-10 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip x11-common recommends no packages. -- debconf information excluded -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
