Turns out, this was caused by my customized Xorg configuration having the font paths still set to /usr/lib/X11/fonts instead of their new paths in /usr/share/fonts/X11/ (after the Xorg 7 transition). I changed the FontPath statements in my xorg.conf, and all was well.
