Right..There was another package containing the same libGL.so file. I uninstalled it, reinstalled xlibmesa-gl, and direct redering is enabled.. :).
Now glxgears renders around 600 FPS, which is better but still kind of slow.On the other hand, the display (2D) is really slow. Even switching between windows is slow.. I can see the new window being drawn.
