May I ask whether you've looked into using a tool designed for this
purpose, such as gnome-mag or kmag?

Considering all of the above, and assuming there's only one monitor
connected to the graphics card, I suspect this is a duplicate of
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=353367 (Radeon 9100 is
mostly identical to 8500). If so, either of

        Option  "MonitorLayout" "CRT,NONE"
        Option  "MergedFB" "off"

should work around the problem.
