To those who have the problem and need a quick workaround - since this affects many apps - get an old copy of the package, e.g.:
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/main/x/xft/libxft2_2.1.7-1_i386.deb And, as root, do a "dpkg -i libxft2_2.1.7-1_i386.deb". That worked for me.
