xresprobe is a very nice tool, it will investigate the connected monitor, and allow you to set the resolutions supported by the monitor. We may consider using it already in g-i, since it would allow to set the framebuffer size or something, but i am not sure how this can be done easily. currently xresprobe doesn't really support multi-headed setups though, but it would be nice to have this solved for etch.
