The symptoms of this problem are that finger prints a bogus idle time for the :0 entry (this system was installed ~ 98 days ago), using `finger jeff' I get: On since Thu Sep 16 08:53 (EDT) on :0 from console 277 days 22 hours idle using `finger [EMAIL PROTECTED]' I get (note: cfingerd is installed): On since Thu Sep 16 08:53AM (EDT) on :0 Idle 23278 days 07:00:00 from console [MSG-N] Notice the bogus ip-address (235.69.3.64) in the utmp record for :0, jeff|:0|7|:0|357|235.69.3.64|console |Thu Sep 16 08:53:54 1999 which leads me to believe that sessreg is the culprit, even though the idle times from the finger output differ. Here are the gory details showing my hostname's ip-address and complete output from both fingers above followed by a utmp dump, 47 jeff ~ $ ping -c1 `hostname` PING eden-hda7 (127.0.0.1): 56 data bytes 64 bytes from 127.0.0.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.1 ms --- eden-hda7 ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 packets received, 0% packet loss round-trip min/avg/max = 0.1/0.1/0.1 ms 33 jeff ~ $ finger jeff Login: jeff Name: Jeff Sheinberg Directory: /home/jeff Shell: /bin/sh On since Thu Sep 16 08:53 (EDT) on :0 from console 277 days 22 hours idle On since Thu Sep 16 08:53 (EDT) on ttyp0 from :0.0 50 seconds idle On since Thu Sep 16 08:53 (EDT) on ttyp1 from :0.0 On since Thu Sep 16 08:54 (EDT) on ttyp2 from :0.0 20 minutes 29 seconds idle Last login Thu Sep 16 09:24 (EDT) on ttyp3 from eden-hda7 New mail received Thu Sep 16 13:00 1999 (EDT) Unread since Wed Sep 15 21:49 1999 (EDT) No Plan. 34 jeff ~ $ finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] [eden-hda7] Username: jeff In real life: Jeff Sheinberg Home directory: /home/jeff Shell: /bin/sh Room: Work phone: Home phone: Other: This user last read mail Wed Sep 15 09:49PM (EDT) This user has unread mail since Thu Sep 16 01:00PM (EDT) On since Thu Sep 16 08:53AM (EDT) on :0 Idle 23278 days 07:00:00 from console [MSG-N] On since Thu Sep 16 08:53AM (EDT) on ttyp0 Idle 00:00:58 from :0.0 On since Thu Sep 16 08:53AM (EDT) on ttyp1 from :0.0 On since Thu Sep 16 08:54AM (EDT) on ttyp2 Idle 00:20:34 from :0.0 42 jeff ~ $ dump-utmp /var/run/utmp | sed -e 's/ //g' ||8|si|6| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:32 1999 runlevel|~ |1|~~|20018| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:32 1999 ||8|l2|262| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 LOGIN |tty1|6|1 |336| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 LOGIN |tty2|6|2 |337| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 LOGIN |tty3|6|3 |338| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 LOGIN |tty4|6|4 |339| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 LOGIN |tty5|6|5 |340| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 LOGIN |tty6|6|6 |341| ||Thu Sep 16 08:53:40 1999 jeff|:0|7|:0|357|235.69.3.64|console |Thu Sep 16 08:53:54 1999 jeff|ttyp0 |7|p0|416| |:0.0|Thu Sep 16 08:53:57 1999 jeff|ttyp1 |7|p1|417| |:0.0|Thu Sep 16 08:53:57 1999 jeff|ttyp2 |7|p2|428| |:0.0|Thu Sep 16 08:54:04 1999 |ttyp3 |8|p3| 1101| ||Thu Sep 16 09:55:38 1999 Thanks, -- Jeff Sheinberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> -- System Information Debian Release: 2.1 Kernel Version: Linux eden-hda7 2.0.36 #2 Thu Jun 24 19:46:13 EDT 1999 i586 unknown Versions of the packages xbase-clients depends on: ii libc6 2.0.7.19981211 GNU C Library: shared libraries ii libncurses4 4.2-3 Shared libraries for terminal handling ii xlib6g 3.3.2.3a-11 shared libraries required by X clients ii zlib1g 1.1.3-2 compression library - runtime --------------------------------------- Received: (at 11147-done) by bugs.debian.org; 11 Jul 2005 18:40:29 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Mon Jul 11 11:40:29 2005 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from grex.cyberspace.org [216.86.77.194] (exim) by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Ds3Cf-0004Ww-00; Mon, 11 Jul 2005 11:40:29 -0700 Received: from dajo (helo=localhost) by grex.cyberspace.org with local-esmtp (Exim 4.42) id 1Ds3FP-0000YK-6i; Mon, 11 Jul 2005 14:43:19 -0400 Date: Mon, 11 Jul 2005 14:43:19 -0400 (EDT) From: Daniel Jonan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: too old and merged Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: Daniel Jonan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 (1.212-2003-09-23-exp) on spohr.debian.org X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-3.0 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_00 autolearn=no version=2.60-bugs.debian.org_2005_01_02 X-Spam-Level: X-CrossAssassin-Score: 2 closing -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
