Yes, quite right -- aterm and my console are silently using a non-UTF8 locale, masking the problem for them. A glance at the source shows that zsh is not wide-character aware. Not only that, there's already a bug open against zsh (#205651) describing the problem. I'm very sorry for the noise and disturbance. Carry on, sir.
