Subject: dpkg: dselect receives HUP signal - character conversion problem?

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.9.17
Severity: normal

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Using a locale with UTF-8 encoding in X, dselect and the xterm it was
running from will vanish if I enter the package selecting screen. An
strace quickly reveals that it receives a hangup signal, but no trace
of an explicit call to kill().

If I run dselect in console, using the same locale, everything works
just fine.
