I also tried xdm again and it worked too which i found strange but then i did the following wich brings some new facts (at least to me): deleting the .mozilla dir (created by firefox, just after i had made the switch to kdm due to not being able to start it when using xdm), this prevents firefox from running (with the error already mentioned), using xdm. wdm and kdm both work ok with or without a .mozilla dir in place.
