Which kernel are you using? is the 2.4.25 that you are running a debian package (and if so exactly which version) or a vanilla kernel you compiled your self? Please install xserver-xfree86-dbg and run a gdb session on it. Theoretically even with the code removal X should be able to fail nicely and not to segfault.
