a few months ago an upgrade does not allow to enter e.g. "@", which is normally 
alt_gr 2 (is alt_r

the key itself seems to work, as in gnome, alt_r - esc switches between

You may have inadvertently deleted some of the files under /etc/X11/xkb,
or something may have gone wrong during the long-since-reverted
migration of the XKB data files from xlibs to xlibs-data.
