The r128 and radeon 2D drivers don't deal gracefully with the DRM failing to load the firmware. That's a bug which has been fixed at least in the radeon driver in DRI CVS. I suggest those who insisted on inconveniencing users by crippling the kernel-image packages dig up the fix and provide it to the XSF. Alternatively, they could provide the microcode in a convenient way.
