Hello, I just followed the track I pointed to myself -- in KDE control center the keyboard layout was set to pc104, setting it to pc105 re-enabled the key. So it's a problem of a KDE package that got updated that day.
No that was no user config error -- I use <,> and | almost every single day and I know that it worked before 2004-02-19. bye caspar
