Further information.
I installed XFree 4.3 packages backported to woody and then did a
dist-upgrade again. This time it seems if more packages were
installed as a result of dist-upgrade and after a few apt-get -f
install's and a final dist-upgrade, the X11 is working again.
So what probably happened is that this morning dist-upgrade did not
complete properly and you can probably close the bug.
I must have tried again before submitting the bug.
