When I start X11 using startx -- :0, I get fonts that are about 6 steps too large. So to get the fonts to look right, I have to decrease the font size in the KDE Control Center from, say, 12 to 6. GUI fonts in all applications are too large -- the splash screen, mozilla, KDE. It doesn't matter which x-server number you tell startx to start. For instance, startx -- :3 does the same. User also doesn't matter. -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Linux sigillo 2.6.0-test11 #1 Mon Dec 29 19:27:55 PST 2003 i686 GNU/Linux Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C Versions of packages xbase-clients depends on: ii cpp-3.2 1:3.2.3-9 The GNU C preprocessor ii libc6 2.3.2.ds1-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libdps1 4.3.0-0pre1v5 Display PostScript (DPS) client li ii libexpat1 1.95.6-6 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libfontconfig1 2.2.1-13 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.1.7-1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libice6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libncurses5 5.3.20030719-4 Shared libraries for terminal hand ii libpng12-0 1.2.5.0-4 PNG library - runtime ii libsm6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System Session Management ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.3-0pre1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libxaw7 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Athena widget set library ii libxcursor1 1.0.2-4 X Cursor management library ii libxext6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxft2 2.1.2-5 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxi6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System Input extension li ii libxmu6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System miscellaneous util ii libxmuu1 4.3.0-0pre1v5 lightweight X Window System miscel ii libxpm4 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X pixmap library ii libxrandr2 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System Resize, Rotate and ii libxrender1 0.8.3-5 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Toolkit Intrinsics ii libxtrap6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System protocol-trapping ii libxtst6 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System event recording an ii libxv1 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System video extension li ii xlibmesa-gl [libgl1] 4.3.0-0pre1v5 Mesa 3D graphics library [XFree86] ii xlibmesa-glu [libglu1] 4.3.0-0pre1v5 Mesa OpenGL utility library [XFree ii xlibs 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System client libraries m ii xlibs-data 4.3.0-0pre1v5 X Window System client data ii zlib1g 1:1.2.1-3 compression library - runtime -- no debconf information --------------------------------------- Received: (at 230243-done) by bugs.debian.org; 3 Feb 2004 22:10:52 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Feb 03 14:10:52 2004 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from dhcp065-026-182-085.indy.rr.com (redwald.deadbeast.net) [65.26.182.85] by spohr.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 1Ao8kt-0003Fx-00; Tue, 03 Feb 2004 14:10:52 -0800 Received: by redwald.deadbeast.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 0FE5E6445C; Tue, 3 Feb 2004 17:10:51 -0500 (EST) Date: Tue, 3 Feb 2004 17:10:50 -0500 From: Branden Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#230243: xbase-clients: startx -- :0 uses too large UI fonts Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> References: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="gh4H09KImyIEQ1se" Content-Disposition: inline In-Reply-To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mail-Copies-To: nobody X-No-CC: I subscribe to this list; do not CC me on replies. Closing this report with this message. > I understand from man startx that the content of .xinitrc could be=20 > placed in .xsession -- is this relevant to passing arguments to the X=20 > server via startx? Not really. Note that that bit about putting .xintirc stuff in =2Exsession instead applies only (as far as I know) to Debian systems, where I have set things up such that the user's environment strives to be identical whether xdm or startx/xinit is used. > Or put differently, is there a way to pass argument to the X server > via startx that retains the default arguments sent to the X server by > xinitrc, with the exception of the argument you pass via startx? No. This wouldn't be impossible, but it is a feature that would have to be implemented. It would also need some consideration, as in general people are pretty used to the semantics of xinit and startx that are described in their manpages. > That is to say, it would be useful if default values remain in force=20 > unless they are explicitly overridden. I agree, and it would have been nice if xinit had been written that way =66rom the beginning. Unfortunately, it has 15 years of inertia or so. > The process of starting the X server is byzantine and may need to be, It probably needs to be somewhat Byzantine, but I won't attempt to defend the proposition that it is no *more* Byzantine than it needs to be. :) > but if anything can be done to provide a better user interface that > would be a big win. The power of the X server is one of the triumphs > of free software, and it's surely underused. That's one reason this package is fun to work on. Sometimes, anyway. If you continue to feel that xinit should be rewritten, please file a wishlist-severity bug with the Debian BTS. Thank you for your report. --=20 G.
