Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.2.1-6 Severity: important File: /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/savage_drv.o
My computer is a Shuttle XPC SK41G, whose mainboard is the Shuttle FX41. I am not entirely sure about the canonical name of the graphics controller: different sources have slightly different names. According to the manual, the mainboard has a "VIA KM266/VT8375 N.B. and VIA VT8235 S.B.", and the "VIA KM266/VT8375 integrates a full featured S3 ProSavage8 128-bit 2D/3D AGP controller". The Via web site calls this a "ProSavageDDR" chipset, and the X server log claims it is a "ProSavage DDR-K". A possibly important point is that the graphics controller does not have separate RAM but reserves a part of the system memory. The controller mostly works with the 4.2.1 version of XFree86, but I have had some strange crashes. There is a repeatable way to cause a crash: start up kseg (version 0.3-3), draw two points (with the rightmost mouse button), select the points and draw a line through them (with Alt-L or via the menus). Then drag one of the points in a circle around the other, so the line gets redrawn in various directions. Very soon my computer will freeze completely (requiring a hard reset), sometimes with out-of-place lines on the root window. My guess is that since in kseg the line extends (conceptually) infinitely far, kseg uses some very large coordinates, and some layer between kseg and the video hardware should restrict the coordinates but doesn't, and the line gets drawn in a wrong part of the memory. Setting either the NoAccel option in the Device section or the XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine option in the Screen section prevents this crash. I am therefore guessing that the problem lies in the Savage driver. The bug-reporting script seems to have included my config file and a log file from the crash. For comparison, here are diffs that show the case when XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine is on and the server does not crash: --- /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 2003-05-20 22:34:49.000000000 +0300 +++ ./XF86Config-4.no-crash 2003-05-20 22:34:32.000000000 +0300 @@ -73,7 +73,7 @@ Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection - #Option "XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine" "true" + Option "XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine" "true" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" --- /var/log/XFree86.0.log 2003-05-20 22:36:07.000000000 +0300 +++ ./XFree86.0.log.no-crash 2003-05-20 22:34:41.000000000 +0300 @@ -16,7 +16,7 @@ Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting, (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational, (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown. -(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Tue May 20 22:36:05 2003 +(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Tue May 20 22:32:23 2003 (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4" (==) ServerLayout "Default Layout" (**) |-->Screen "Default Screen" (0) @@ -494,6 +494,7 @@ (--) SAVAGE(0): mapping framebuffer @ 0xe0000000 with size 0x2000000 (==) SAVAGE(0): Write-combining range (0xe0000000,0x2000000) (II) SAVAGE(0): Using 1023 lines for offscreen memory. +(**) SAVAGE(0): Option "XaaNoSolidBresenhamLine" "true" (II) SAVAGE(0): Using XFree86 Acceleration Architecture (XAA) Screen to screen bit blits Solid filled rectangles 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc.
