I tried your suggestion to start kdm directly - and it went into a cyclical X restarting loop. So - that promted me to try a simple startx - no joy there either :-( I get "No screens found" :-( Looks like the upgrade broke X this time - but then - that's the penalty for running unstable (although it's been suprisingly stable for me for a long time).
