Hello, I just wanted to confirm the same behavior with version 4.2.1-6 of xserver-xfree86 . When switching from graphical console into the text console, sometimes the text is garbled and looks like blocks. Other times, the machine locks up (not just keyboard and mouse, I can't even ping it anymore).
I used debconf to configure the server, and then modified the frequencies of my monitor by hand, but it shouldn't have mattered, should it?
