"x-window-system" core exists to give the user practically everything from the XFree86 distribution. That means not just any window manager, but twm. That means not just any terminal emulator, but xterm. That means not just any display manager, but xdm. It sounds like "x-window-system-core" is more suited to your purposes, if you don't care for xdm.
