I fixed it myself, by downgrading the msttcorefonts package to the
version in woody. I've outlined the procedure here:

For me the problem affected the fonts used by Netscape 4.77 and Opera,
and made XEmacs crash on startup.
I really should get around to reporting this bug, and the workaround,
to the msttcorefonts package.
