actually that was unnecessary. I was able to reproduce this using either strace or xtrace to slow things down. The underlying issue is an obliquely-documented(*) misfeature of the X11 library, for which I can make a suitable workaround. (*) I'd say "undocumented", but someone who reads the source code would argue that someone could _guess_ from the manual page what the code is actually doing :-) -- Thomas E.
