README.Debian says
Xresources contains X resources that are designed to be specific to
sessions running under xdm. Note that this file does contain the
resource entries for xdm itself -- those are contained in the file
xdm-config.
I found this a little unclear, in as much as Xresources does in fact
contain resources for xdm itself (appearance). As a suggestion, maybe
something like (assuming it's correct! :),
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config contains X resources of xdm's
"DisplayManager" host options, including possibly different
filenames for the further files below. See the X(1) manual page for
more information about X resources, and the xdm(1) manual page for
documentation of the available xdm resources.
/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources contains X resources for xdm's login widget
appearance (including the Debian logo), and resources for external
programs which xdm may run (the external host "chooser"). These
resources are not present in the user's session once logged in (see
/etc/X11/Xresources for that).
I wouldn't mind seeing full filenames like /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources, at
least at their first appearance. I know the directory is described at
the start, but all these X related things start to look the same after a
while so the full may help the casual reader or cutting and pasting.
