Hi David, I'm happy to report that following your advice to load the "nv" driver seems to have allowed XFree86-debug to run.
I should probably also mention that I upgraded xserver-xfree86-dbg from version 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 to 4.3.0.dfsg.1-13 but I doubt it helped. The new version fails with the "nvidia" driver too. Hopefully we'll catch a SEGV if I leave XFree86-debug with the "nv" driver running long enough!
