Hello, More symptoms:
When an application puts out text to the console (in my case fsck on a usb drive reporting I/O errors) random dots appear, sometimes all over the screen. Sometimes, the text on the screen is totally unreadable. Shifting consoles (ctl-alt-Fn) redraws the screen and the text is readable again and the random dots disappear. This is strictly on the text consoles. Kdm is waiting for login on console 7. In the windowing environment, kde upon startup claims that there is a problem with the GL library and thus it's not being used. The kde crash handler provided the following backtrace: Application: KWin (kwin), signal: Segmentation fault Using host libthread_db library "/lib/i386-linux-gnu/i686/cmov/libthread_db.so.1". It does other types of acceleration. Other times, the windowing system freezes completely. The only thing that can be done is login via ssh and shutdown the machine. Killing -9 the kde processes doesn't work. Shifting consoles doesn't work. These freezing episodes have been triggered by attempting to move a konsole window (the frame then gets this random-dots look and everything stops), by attempting an operation on the panel (menus popping up) or by trying to get a menu by clicking on the konsole border.
