It seems this issue is still around, I hope you don't mind if I re-open this bug. I have the exact same problem happening right now on wheezy using an "Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller (rev 03)". I tried downgrading libcairo2 since that seems to be a common source for font rendering issues but it didn't help (I tried 1.10.2-7 which was recommended in some other bug report).
