Well, unless you're using a very similar desktop environment in Debian and used the Ubuntu system in exactly the same way (as much as possible), you might just have happened not to hit the bug with Ubuntu. Otherwise, it might be interesting to isolate how Ubuntu fixed this in which package(s) (most likely xserver-xorg-video-radeon, libdrm or the kernel).
