I had already open the bug against gdm but i think that it must involve also xfree package. The problem is also that if gdm doesn't start newbie users can't also use gnome without an xfree reconfiguration. Solve this problem is also in the interest of gnome and all desktop users. We could think at a solution and build a patch against (?gdm/xfree/x.org?) and attach to the bug.
