For the records, the problem I found seems closer to http://bugs.debian.org/626331 (gnome-settings-daemon doesn't allow to log into IceWM, LXDE.) with the difference that I do not have gnome-settings-daemon installed. I will send a followup there. One of the packages updated today in my testing box was xserver-xorg-core, mentioned as a possibility in that bug report, and looking at the date it entered sid, is about the time I started noticing problems.
