Right; I think I've made the same comment myself.

I take it you're not using a dynamically created /dev (such as udev or
devfs)?

What are /dev/mouse and /dev/psaux on your system?  I ask because
oftentimes /dev/mouse is a manually created symlink pointing to psaux.
