Okay.  I'm going to regard that part of this problem as a kernel issue that
has been resolved.

That's where it stopped?  Bizarre.

I have a couple more questions:

1) Can you try the "vesa" driver instead of "s3"?

2) Do you have a Debian x86 system, preferably running Debian
   testing/unstable and kernel 2.6.8 or later, that you could slap this
   card into?  I'm curious to know if this is truly an Alpha-specific
   problem.
