Volker, you seem to be using 2.6.32-27, which has that patch.

Yes and no....

Yes, the kernel sources I get with
"aptitude install linux-source-2.6.32" are version 2.6.32-27 and
include the patch.

No, I'm using the default kernel with squeeze which is 2.6.32-5.

No. That's the package name, not its version. Look at /proc/version.

Ok, that tells me:
$ cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.32-5-686 (Debian 2.6.32-27) (m...@debian.org) (gcc version 4.3.5 (Debian 4.3.5-4) ) #1 SMP Sat Oct 30 22:47:19 UTC 2010

But then, the problem is still there... Seems to be a different problem related with the Radeon registers then as it's fixed by the radeontool workaround described above.

$ sudo radeontool regset DAC_MACRO_CNTL 0x00000808
OLD: DAC_MACRO_CNTL (0d04)      0x00000000 (0)
NEW: DAC_MACRO_CNTL (0d04)      0x00000808 (2056)

Cheers,
  Volker
