As powerpc kernels have radeonfb enabled by default, something else that might help would be to fix the radeon kernel module to fall back to UMS when something else has claimed the device, rather than staying inactive with KMS 'enabled'. But I'm not sure that alone would do, so this is probably still a good idea I'm afraid.
