Fortunately I don't run compiz, but I found that after switching to console and back, no OpenGL application would start anymore. E.g. glxgears or prboom (with OpenGL renderer enabled) just hang right at the start. Restarting X is necessary to get OpenGL back. I've downgraded to 2:1.7.7-4 now and the problem is gone.
