I posted a patch for xfree86-1 to debian-devel and debian-x some time ago and got a lot of positive feedback. The patch seems to prevent Netscape crashes on a lot of systems and does not cause any harm to other X applications. Please include this patch in your source package to compile parts of libXt.so with gcc272 on i386 (and a build dependency on gcc272). -- Stefan Gybas --------------07F36F2DE569BA271547E6F7 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; name="011_egcs-motif.diff" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="011_egcs-motif.diff" diff -ruN xc.o/lib/Xt/Imakefile xc/lib/Xt/Imakefile > 011_egcs-motif.diff --- xc.o/lib/Xt/Imakefile Fri Nov 6 14:54:31 1998 +++ xc/lib/Xt/Imakefile Sun Jan 9 15:25:50 2000 @@ -150,6 +150,11 @@ Vendor.c \ sharedlib.c +#ifdef i386Architecture +XCOMM horrible kludge to work around egcs problem that makes Motif applications (like Netscape) crash - some parts of libXt must be compiled with "gcc-2.7.2 -O2" for them to work +Callback.o Destroy.o: CC=gcc272 +#endif + OBJS = \ $(MISCOBJS) \ ActionHook.o \ --------------07F36F2DE569BA271547E6F7-- --------------------------------------- Received: (at 55457-done) by bugs.debian.org; 2 Sep 2003 10:38:55 +0000 >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tue Sep 02 05:38:29 2003 Return-path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Received: from dhcp065-026-182-085.indy.rr.com (redwald.deadbeast.net) [65.26.182.85] by master.debian.org with esmtp (Exim 3.35 1 (Debian)) id 19u8YL-0005BR-00; Tue, 02 Sep 2003 05:38:25 -0500 Received: by redwald.deadbeast.net (Postfix, from userid 1000) id 34B1064120; Tue, 2 Sep 2003 05:38:24 -0500 (EST) Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2003 05:38:23 -0500 From: Branden Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: xlibs: Please include build patch for Netscape Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/signed; micalg=pgp-sha1; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; boundary="uXxzq0nDebZQVNAZ" Content-Disposition: inline User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.4i Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] X-Spam-Status: No, hits=-9.3 required=4.0 tests=BAYES_30,PGP_SIGNATURE_2,USER_AGENT_MUTT version=2.53-bugs.debian.org_2003_8_27 X-Spam-Level: X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.53-bugs.debian.org_2003_8_27 (1.174.2.15-2003-03-30-exp) --uXxzq0nDebZQVNAZ Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Disposition: inline Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable This bug should have been closed a few years ago. xfree86-1 (3.3.4-1) unstable; urgency=3Dlow [...] * patch #011: changed Imakefiles to work around alleged egcs optimization breakage of netscape (Adam Heath) [...] -- Branden Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Wed, 25 Aug 1999 21:16:27 -0500 However, later: xfree86-1 (3.3.6-1) unstable; urgency=3Dlow [...] * removed patches: - the "egcs/Netscape" bug workaround; according to Debian Netscape package maintainer, it doesn't actually accomplish anything [...] -- Branden Robinson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Mon, 10 Jan 2000 18:23:20 -0500 In any event, this issue is no longer relvant.
