It was found to be damage caused by an attempt to install some non-packaged software from VMWare. /usr/bin/X11/X (what should be Debian's X server wrapper) got overwritten. Since in Debian, only the wrapper is setuid root, not the X server executables themselves, this resulted in an X server that didn't have permission to do very much. Resolved with "apt-get --reinstall install xserver-common". --=20 G. Branden Robinson | Build a fire for a man, and he'll Debian GNU/Linux | be warm for a day.
