Way ahead of you. Tried something similar years ago. Doesn't work, because there is no way to escape newlines within a debconf command stream[1], and since you obviously cannot store everyone's lspci output literally in the template, you have to use db_subst to put it there. A perusal of the xserver-xfree86 "config" maintainer script reveals where I attempted to do this, and has comments repeating the above information -- even today. But, I forgot...no one actually reads my maintainer scripts or thinks I have the first clue about these things. :-P [1] no way that I know of, anyway... -- G.
