My X hanged when I select the font -*-*-*-*-*-*-15-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1 in xfontsel with nvidia drivers (with nv driver, xfontsel showed some garbage but X didn't hang). This font is from xfonts-cronyx-misc package. It seems it is broken. Look at Debian bug #170413.
