I had the exact same problem on my T20 with the Savage/MX chipset. I tried changing resolutions, color depths. I threw out my X config and started over. I tried through an external monitor, or the panel directly. None of them worked.
I had to spend two hours downgrading almost everything, and reinstalling against testing just to get my X back up.
