Using a font server in this case would not have saved you; instead of
crashing the X server, the bug would've crashed the font server. And
the X server is not particularly good at recovering when the font
server crashes (although that behaviour has been improved somewhat in
the 4.* series w.r.t. 3.3.* and the X.Org sources).
