Fixed the problem of the eternally looping X server. Turns out that
/etc/X11/X was pointing to an old X server in /usr/bin/X11/X, rather than
/usr/bin/X11/XFree86. Moral of the story is never install major system
software on a hangover :) Should this be files as a bug?
