Actually, the search path's value comes from the Imakefile, where is is
set via some imake function like this: 
        SEARCHPATHDEFAULT = XFileSearchPathDefault

However, I think it's used as a search path for more than just
app-defaults files, so playing tricks with it directly may not be wise.
