End of May/beginning of June 2018 is when the cvs to git transition took place, that could have been a side effect. They were a bunch of commits on 2018-06-04 that seem like they could have fixed the buggy behaviour you've spotted: you can check 6e1be1595a987b4c8b38df41146890869855f6a5 and a bunch of follow-up commits if you like.
