Package: www.debian.org Severity: minor Tags: l10n Background ----------
Validation errors are emailed daily to (among others) translation coordinators by the validate-mail script: https://salsa.debian.org/webmaster-team/cron/-/blob/master/scripts/validate-mail This is very useful, since I *DO* want to be notified about issues introduced by those who translate to my language (whether it's me or someone else). The issue --------- *However*, since most translated WML files have the same markup structure as the English originals, most (if not all) validation errors for English pages also apply to the translated pages. Compare for example: https://www-master.debian.org/build-logs/validate/en and https://www-master.debian.org/build-logs/validate/pl In a typical ephemeral case (someone commits broken markup and it gets fixed a couple days later) this is merely distracting. It was bugging me whan I was actively working on the translations a couple of decades ago :-) but it was never annoying enough to do something about it. However these days there are some long-standing issues which will probably take some more time to resolve: https://bugs.debian.org/980921 The fix is being discussed for weeks and is likely to take some more time. This means it is not really actionable to a typical translator. Even in case of smaller issues, unfortunately having very limited time resources I cannot afford to chase every markup validation issue in the that is merely copied with the structure of the page translated to my language. My proposal ----------- What I'd like to propose is to take advantage of the fact that the original and translated pages have the same structure, in order to make translation coordinators' lives a little easier. My idea is to change the validate-mail script: when mailing validation errors of a given language (other than English), omit all the errors which *also* appear in the English validation output. It's not going to be perfect (because line numbers will have to be ignored), but should work reasonably well in most cases, and not interfere the steady state (no validation errors in the English version). regards, Marcin -- System Information: Debian Release: 10.8 APT prefers stable-debug APT policy: (500, 'stable-debug'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 4.19.0-14-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=pl_PL.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=pl_PL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=pl_PL.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled
