There were some helpful comments recently (were they on-list or at debconf...?), so it's on my list of things to revisit soon. Please hold off for a month or so. It's been like that for a long while - surely another month won't hurt. If you must change it, why not do it with the right sort of redirect on search.d.o, rather than rewriting the search box?
